Questions, answered.

Can't find it here? Email [email protected]. A real person reads every message. Please never send us your pattern or recovery words: we don't need them, and nobody who asks for them is us.

Getting in

I forgot my pattern.

On the lock screen, tap Forgot pattern? and enter (or scan) your 12 recovery words, then set a new pattern. Full steps →

I lost my pattern and my recovery words.

Then the vault can't be opened, by you, us or anyone else. That's the same property that keeps everyone else out. If you have a backup and remember its recovery phrase, you can restore from that.

Why does the pad make me wait?

After five wrong patterns, Brikwall pauses for 30 seconds, and the wait doubles with every miss up to an hour. That stops someone from trying pattern after pattern. Only the correct pattern resets the count.

Can you reset my pattern if I prove who I am?

No. We never have your key, so there's nothing for us to reset. That's the point.

A wrong pattern opened nothing. Is that a different vault?

No. A pattern that doesn't match any vault shows "Wrong pattern". To make another vault on purpose, use New vault on the lock screen.

Backup & moving phones

Google Drive doesn't appear when I save a backup.

Some phones, including some Samsung models, leave Drive off Android's save screen. Use Send to Google Drive or an app instead, which opens the share menu, and pick Drive there.

How do I move to a new phone?

Make a fresh backup on the old phone, install Brikwall on the new one, then tap I have a vault → Restore and enter your 12 words. Full steps →

Does my pattern work on the new phone?

No. Patterns are tied to the old phone's security chip. After restoring with your recovery words, you draw a new pattern.

Are backups automatic?

Not yet. Tap Back up now whenever you've added something you'd hate to lose. Home reminds you if it's been a while.

Can Google read my backup?

No. The backup file is encrypted before it leaves Brikwall, and it only opens with your recovery phrase.

I replaced my recovery phrase. Do old backups still work?

Yes, but with the old phrase. Make a new backup after replacing your phrase, so your current words open it.

Using the vault

Which file types open inside Brikwall?

Photos, videos, PDFs (Android 11 and newer), Word (.docx, .odt), Markdown, and text or data files such as .txt, .csv and .json. Everything else is stored safely and can be exported.

Why can't I record video?

Recording straight into the vault needs Android 11 or newer, because the video is held in a memory-only file until it's sealed. On older phones you can still take photos, and import videos from your gallery.

Are the originals deleted when I import?

Only if you choose to. Brikwall asks, and Android shows its own confirmation screen listing exactly what will go. Check Google Photos' trash and cloud backup too.

Why are my screenshots black?

Brikwall blocks screenshots and screen recording on every screen, and blanks its preview in recent apps. That's deliberate.

Why did the vault lock when I switched apps?

It locks the moment you leave, so nobody can pick up where you left off. Turn on Quick unlock to get back in with your fingerprint or face for a short while.

How much can I store?

As much as your phone has room for. The free plan allows 100 photos and 10 videos per vault; Pro removes that limit. Documents and other files aren't limited.

Pro & billing

How do I restore Pro on a new phone?

Use the same Google account, open the Pro screen and tap Restore purchases.

How do I cancel?

Play Store → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Brikwall → Cancel. You keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.

What if my subscription ends?

Nothing gets locked. Your files stay readable, and features you set up keep working. You just can't add items past the free limits or set up new Pro features.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds go through Google Play. Request one at play.google.com → Account → Order history, or email us and we'll help.

Privacy & trust

What does Brikwall send over the internet?

Only a purchase check with RevenueCat, our billing provider: an anonymous ID, the purchase, the app version, device model and language. Never files, patterns, keys or vault counts. The app can't connect anywhere else. Privacy policy →

Do you have ads or analytics?

No ads, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising ID.

Could someone tell I have more than one vault?

Not from the app, which never lists vaults, and not from the files, which are mixed with dummies that look identical. They can see how much is stored in total.

Which phones are supported?

Android 9 and newer. Phones with StrongBox or a secure environment (almost every phone sold in recent years) get the hardware-bound key. The setup screen shows which yours has.

Is there an iPhone version?

Not yet.
